My grandmother Mary was born in Cahereevagh Townland in Kilmaine Parish Mayo 1914. She was the daughter of John Gilmore and his second wife Ellen Finnerty. When she was born she had two half brothers and a half sister who would all emigrate to the USA in the 1920s while she was a teenager. She had two full brothers and two full sisters. Mary was 19 when she married my Grandfather

The parents of John Gilmore (b1861) were Bryan Gilmore (b1818-died 1883) and Mary Gibbons (b1818-d1898) in Cathereevagh, County Mayo. John was the second youngest of nine. The other children of Bryan Gilmore and Mary Gibbons were :

  • Bernard, born1840
  • Ellen, born 1842.  Married Francis Lohan in February 1873. Lived in Belcare, County Galway and died in Sylane in 1936.
  • Bridget, born 1846
  • Thomas, born 1846 and died 1913. Emigrated to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1868. Married Ann Robinson (1845-1906) in Hampden, Massachusetts in 1871.
  • Patrick, born 1854, unmarried. Died in 1904
  • Bryan, born 1853. Went to England for work and married Catherine Armstrong (1854-1912) in Aston Under Lyme in 1877. They emigrated to the USA in 1878. Lived in Chicopee and then West Springfield, Massachusetts.
  • Michael, born 1854. Married Bridget Early of Newcastle , Swinford, County Mayo. in 1880. Michael was a Blacksmith. They had nine children.
  • Mary, born 1862. Married Patrick Walsh from Tawnagh East in February 1891. They lived very close by in Cartron (Kirwin) Townland and then Tawnagh East.

Although John had five older brothers two never married and two emigrated and one moved to Swinford, so John took over the farm.

 The Children of John Gilmore and his first wife Anne Conroy

  • Bernard, 1896-1905 (died of Croup)
  • Helen T Gilmore, born 1897. Helen emigrated to the USA in 1923 aged 25, getting the boat from Liverpool to Boston. In November 1933 she married Michael Donuhue (1884-1980) who was from Valentia Island, County Kerry. Helen died in  Stonington, New London, Connecticut in February 1992. Helen had two daughters.
  • Patrick, born 1900. Patrick got the boat to the USA in 1928. (no record found after that)
  • Michael, born 1902 got the boat to New York in September 1925. Destination Springfield Massachusetts. He lived his life in the city of Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey. Michael married Winifred O'Donnell. They lived in VanBuren Ave. Michael died in 1985 and is buried in Mount Olivet cemetery.

Anne Conroy died in 1903 aged only 33 of suspected heart failure. .

John Gilmore remarried to my Great grandmother Ellen Finnerty on the 7th of February 1906. As he was a farmer with three young children he remarried just over two years after his first wife died. My great grandmother Ellen Finnerty was from the Toberrowe/ Brownsisland area. Toberrowe and Brownsisland border each other but the former is in County Galway and the latter in County Mayo. Her father was Martin Finnerty (1825-1919 and her mother was Bridget Hughes (1836-1912).  John Gilmore and Ellen Finnerty went on to have five children:

  • John Gilmore, (1907-1981). John married Katy Morrin (1912-2008) and remained living on the farm in Cathereevagh.
  • Delia, born September 1908. Delia arrived in Boston in September 1927. She married Thomas Horgan from Moorestown, Dingle, County Kerry in January 1936 in Brooklyn. She died in Brooklyn in 1987. Delia had two daughters and a son.
  • Tommy, died of pneumonia in December 1935 aged only 24. 
  • Mary - my grandmother,  born 12th of April 1914. Died 2000 in Galway
  • Julia, born November b1917-d1986. She married Lawrence May of Cathermagry, near the Neale, County Mayo.

Finnerty relatives (Toberrowe and Brownsisland)

The oldest relative on this line is Martin Finnerty of Brownsisland, Mayo who was born at approximately 1800 or before. He had five children that I have identified :  

  • Martin Finnerty (1825-1919) who married Bridget Hughes (1836-1912) lived in Toberrowe
  • Ellen (1826-1878) who emigrated to South Carolina. Her married name was O'Tuel. They had a son called Augustus 1853-1921
  • Richard James Finnerty (1862-1882) married Ellen Newell (1939-1896) and went to Philadelphia, USA
  • Margaret Finnerty (b1826) married to Thomas Golding (1833-1888) lived in Tawnagh. Daughters were Maria Golding (b1860) who married Thomas Nalty and Julia Golding (1866-1930) who lived and died in Tawnagh. Thomas Nalty and maria Golding had three children :James, Margaret and Julia. The two daughters emigrated to the USA.
  • Edward Finnerty (1832-1895) married to Margaret Noone (1837-1912) lived in Brownsisland They had six children, Martin b1863, John b1868, William b1871, Patrick b1871 (emigrated to the Bronx) Bridget b1877 and finally Anne Finnerty b1880 who married Patrick Carroll.

 Martin Finnerty and Bridget Hughes had the following descendants :

  1. Martin Finnerty 1873-1944 married to Mary Higgins
  2. Edward Finnerty b1876
  3. Ellen Finnerty 1880 to 1955 married to John Gilmore.


Martin Finnerty and Mary Higgins had the following children :

  • Margaret Finnerty 1898
  • Bridget D Finnerty 1900, married Michael Gildea. They had three children : Mary b1926, Michael b1928 and Martin b1829
  • Mary Finnerty 1903
  • Edward Finnerty 1908 married to Ellen Farrell.
